The virtual museum (part of the project for deaf people “Culture crosses the border of sound”)
What is it?
A website styled as a virtual museum of Polish culture and art (as part of the educational project for deaf people “Culture crosses the border of sound” carried out by the Marek Mazurek Krakow Foundation for the Development of Deaf Education “Between the Ears” (“Między Uszami”), in which the National Museum in Krakow is a partner. It is a virtual museum, where deaf people have the opportunity to learn about selected works of art and creativity that constitute Poland’s national cultural heritage, was created as part of the ‘Culture crosses the border of sound’ project. The content is divided into three sections – Painting, Literature, Miscellaneous Arts. These sections include films with a Polish Sign Language reader discussing the work in question. The scripts for the films were created by specialists.
Why is it important? / How can it help the professionals of the cultural sector?
The virtual museum proves that the boundary between the World of Silence and the World of Sounds is very fluid and is rather the result of existing stereotypes. It is worth realising that deaf people have access to any visual culture, only the nuances and subtleties of musical art are a barrier.
The tool created also opens up the possibility of exploring Deaf Culture. It shows that museums should open up more and more to presenting art by Deaf artists, including so-called Deaf Art (art containing symbols of Deaf people: butterfly, turquoise, hands, ear, dactylography).
