Developing an action plan for digital mediation: examples of sustainable strategies put in place

Reading time: 3 min

An action plan for digital mediation needs to consider several elements allowing different levels of classification:

The place where the digital mediation takes place: online versus in situ

  • If online, one should consider the website, virtual tours, ideally 360-degree visualization, social media, apps for audio or multimedia guides, etc.
  • If in situ, there is the need to consider the related hardware: audio or multimedia guides, interactive tables / stations / kiosks

The purpose of the digital mediation:

  • Communication: social media, website, newsletters, publications
  • E-commerce: e-ticketing, online shop
  • Edutainment: Quizzes for contributing to the consolidation of the acquired information and gamification in general that makes the experience interesting and unforgettable
  • Memorable experience: immersive shows
  • Visitors’ studies: interactive screens, customer satisfaction quizzes
  • Providing an accessible solution for people who cannot directly come in contact with the heritage
  • Digital preservation of the collections: a collection management system

The duration and objectives of the action plan:

Considering the fast advancement of technology. Such action plan should not be too long, at most 3 years.

  • The short-term objectives (1 year)
  • The mid-term objectives (2 years)
  • The long-term objectives (3 years)

The resources needed for implementing the action plan:

  • Financial: The funds needed to implement the actions to purchase the equipment, the services, the software
  • Human: The trained people needed to turn the actions on paper into reality, the cooperation between people working in different fields
  • Organisational: the support needed from the organization, which spreads from time planning to technical aspects, the synergy with other measures, the care for the people implementing digital actions who might face the risk of burnout, due to continuing digital interaction all the time, outside working hours, and degrading the quality of personal life in favor of never-ending work tasks

The risks that might arise during the implementation:

  • Technical: equipment / software not working properly
  • Human: staff not adapting fast enough to the new requirements
  • Financial: costs are higher at the time of the implementation compared to the moment of planning
  • Organisational: not enough time to allow the implementation of adapted solutions in case such risks occur
