Musée du Louvre-Lens
What is it?
The new museography of the permanent exhibition of Louvre-Lens, comes with new mediation supports, including cartels.
Each artwork will have 2 labels : a standard label, and a graphic label.
Graphic label are labels with a different way to present pieces of information, and might display different pieces of information than standard cartels.
Graphic labels take various forms : either ‘easy to read”, which can take the form of mind maps, graphics, arrows, zooms, maps… Or illustrated, featuring a guide-character to incarnate a theme, and is accompanied by a short quirky and/or humoristic text.
Graphic labels were co-created with various local organizations and schools, depending on the themes they address. For instance, artworks on the theme of plant had their graphic labels co-created with the museum’s gardeners. Artworks on the theme of metal had their graphic labels co-created with professional high school specialized in metal work.
Why is it important? / How can it help the professionals of the cultural sector?
Labels are a very standard format to deliver information in a museum. Because it is such a common and generally accepted form, it can be difficult to challenge it and reinvent it. This practice encourages to look at already available solution, and to reframe these in a more accessible way. It shows a great way to be accessible with low-tech solution, and through a media that is already existing in all museum.
