Online course (part of the “Spektrum” project)

What is it?

The National Museum in Krakow is the leader of the “Spectrum” project (2022) within the framework of “Erasmus+ Youth. Action 2 – Strategic partnerships”. The MNK is implementing the “Spectrum” project based on the rich and long-standing experience of European partners (Spain, Belgium, UK, Italy) in working with people on the autism spectrum. The outcome of the activities was the development of strategies and methodologies to make museums in Poland more friendly to people on the autism spectrum. During a study visit to Madrid, a series of educational films were jointly produced with staff from the Universidad Nacional De Educacion a Distancia (UNED), participants in the project, which discussed some of the aspects of adapting a museum to the needs of people with ASD.

Why is it important? / How can it help the professionals of the cultural sector?

The realisation of educational films in an international environment demonstrates the importance of exchanging information and achieving the best results on the basis of different experiences depending on the environment, geographical region and diverse socio-cultural background.
The preparation of the films provided an opportunity to share experiences in:

  • preparing museum staff to create an autism-friendly space
  • talking to people with autism spectrum disorder planning a visit to the museum
  • creating a neutral environment for highly sensitive people
  • using the museum’s resources and multisensory tools to work with people on the autism spectrum

All these aspects appear in the following modules of the training materials.
