Multimedia audio guide with UWB (location and obstacle avoidance technology)
What is it?
The multimedia audio guide is a touchscreen device designed to meet the specific requirements of museums. It allows the creation of interactive content with an interface adapted to the specific requirements of visitors, including those with disabilities.
Through the multimedia audio guide, the educator can communicate with the group – conveying his or her voice and controlling the content displayed. Visitors can control the material presented in the exhibition and receive information depending on their location. The UWB technology used – location and obstacle avoidance technology – makes it possible to locate the visitor in the exhibition with an accuracy of up to 15cm. With its help, it is possible to create interactive maps with a grid of active points where specific content is called up. Such an effect is already achieved with 4 UWB sensors distributed over an area of 49m2.
Why is it important? / How can it help the professionals of the cultural sector?
The multimedia audio guide is a very modern device and extends the functionality of classic audio guides, e.g.: obtaining the exact position of the visitors in the exhibition opens up new possibilities in the construction of modern educational programmes.
For the visually impaired – classic audio-descriptions can be enriched with indications of the visitor’s current location, warnings about approaching obstacles: stairs, high threshold, low ceiling, etc.
For children – the content of the tour can include tasks to activate the youngest children’s motor skills and keep their attention, by recognising the position of the device low to the floor and encouraging the child to crouch down.
The multimedia audio guide is easy to configure:
- it has a WiFi module, an alarm channel that works with DSO systems and an anti-theft system
- the players are based on the Android system and allow the use of external applications
- the built-in TourBuilder software platform allows content to be built quickly and independently, without the need for a programmer
- is capable of all-day operation and fast overnight charging

Paid. Compared to the costs of a classic audio guide, the initial implementation costs of a multimedia audio guide system are usually 50% higher and can even reach 150%, depending on the requirements. The cost calculation of multimedia audio guides should take into account, in addition to the greater educational and functional attractiveness, the savings in expenditure on graphic and electronic elements in the exhibition, as well as gaining significant freedom to modify and update the exhibition content over its multi-year duration.
User Interface (UI) adaptability
The multimedia audio guide provides a unique interface. The graphics, colours and button layout can be adapted to the exhibition design and the requirements of the target user group – a different one for the elderly, a different one for visitors with disabilities or children.
Platform compatibility
The players are based on the Android system and allow the use of external applications.
