Maturity model by Empathetic museum
What is it?
The maturity model is a self-assessment tool that enables museums and cultural institutions to evaluate their degree of inclusion and empathy towards their audiences and their teams.
Five characteristics categorise the institutional and operational priorities of an Empathetic Museum. Each coloured column in the rubric represents increasing levels of maturity in empathetic practice. Regressive, Emergent, Planned, and Proactive. Checked boxes identify the institution’s current level of achievement. Unchecked boxes represent goals for the institution, and can inspire organisational change, the reallocation of resources, or whatever it takes to reach the highest level of empathy within the organisation.
These categories were defined to capture the wide variety of ways that empathy can be reflected within and by an institution. Civic Vision, Institutional Body Language, and Community Resonance relate to institutional identity and relationships, both internal and external. Timeliness & Sustainability and Performance Measures focus more on operational functions and assessment.
Why is it important? / How can it help the professionals of the cultural sector?
The tool enables institutions to measure and analyse their ability to be inclusive and empathetic towards their public and staff. This fosters an institutional culture that values and practices empathy, which is essential to creating a welcoming environment for all visitors and staff.
By using a maturity model, museums can systematically identify the areas in which they excel and those in need of improvement. This enables more effective and targeted strategic planning, essential for the gradual evolution of the institution towards more empathetic and inclusive practices.
Categories such as ‘civic vision’ and ‘community resonance’ help institutions to assess and improve their impact and interactions with the local community. This can lead to stronger community engagement and more meaningful relationships with the public.
The model provides a clear framework for continuous improvement. Institutions can use this tool to make precise adjustments to their strategy and operations, with a view to improving their empathy maturity. This helps professionals to prioritise initiatives and allocate resources more effectively.
