Foundation “Culture without barriers”

What is it?

The Foundation is active in various cultural spaces, wanting everyone – regardless of degree and type of disability, material or family situation – to have the opportunity to systematically and independently participate in film screenings, theatre performances, to be able to enjoy culture. Some examples of the Foundation’s initiatives:

  • free online film screenings with audiodescription, subtitles for the deaf
  • Polish Dance Theatre’s performance ‘Romeos&Julias unplagued. Traumstadt’ with audiodescription and subtitles for the deaf
  • Rock’AD’Roll: workshop on creating audiodescription for music album covers
  • Warsaw’s downtown tenements and their courtyards – a walk with audio-description

Why is it important? / How can it help the professionals of the cultural sector?

The Foundation’s activities consist of various actions, which makes it important and useful as an example for professionals in the cultural sector. Its members organise or help to organise events for people with disabilities. They also train representatives of cultural institutions, local authorities and businesses in communication and responding to the needs of people with disabilities (workshops on accessibility, empathy, inclusion, for people of all ages).

Areas of expertise

The aim of the Foundation is to make culture accessible to people with various disabilities, mainly people with visual and hearing impairments. The Foundation promotes an inclusive culture and and works on creating and consulting accessible solutions for museums, theatres and other cultural institutions. It conducts workshops and trainings focused on breaking down barriers related to disabilities and creating conditions that enable people with various disabilities to receive culture freely and satisfactorily.

The Foundation cooperates with numerous cultural institutions, local government and business. Members of the Foundation are members of expert and advisory groups in city and provincial administrations and ministries.

Accessible technologies used

Among the guides and tutorials produced by the Foundation are pictograms illustrating accessibility under a Creative Commons licence (CC BY-SA 3.0). This means that they can be used (indicating the author), modified (indicating these changes) and distributed (under the same licence as the original file, i.e. the Foundation file).
